The following link was submitted to Recovery Alternatives by Granite Recovery Centers.  The article addresses some of the many detrimental effects of alcoholism or alcohol abuse.  It was interesting to note that the body can not store alcohol so it must break it down immediately. This process becomes a priority to the body and supercedes other vital functions. In so doing, important body processes, such as fighting infection, become delayed; increasing the risk of harm to the body.
